What to Do in a Dental Emergency

  1. Knocked-Out Tooth:

    • A knocked-out tooth is the most time-sensitive dental emergency.

      • URGENT: Call us immediately. Action within 60 minutes is critical to save the tooth.

      • At-Home Steps: Hold the tooth by the crown (top), not the root. Rinse gently with milk (do not scrub). Try to place it back in the socket, or transport it in milk.

      • Our Solution: We will quickly clean, reimplant, and splint the tooth to give it the best chance of reattaching to the bone.

  2. Dental Abscess or Gum Infection:

    • An abscess is a dangerous infection that will not heal on its own and can impact your overall health.

      • At-Home Steps: Rinse your mouth with warm water. Save any broken pieces. Apply gauze for bleeding. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.

      • Our Solution: Urgent care is required. Treatment involves draining the infection and determining if a root canal can save the tooth.

  3. Severe Toothache:

    • A severe, persistent toothache is your body signaling a serious underlying problem, such as deep decay or infection.

      • At-Home Steps: Rinse with warm salt water. Gently floss around the sore tooth. Apply a cold compress to your cheek. Call us to diagnose the source.

      • Our Solution: We perform a detailed exam and X-ray to find the cause. Treatment may be a filling or root canal to provide immediate and lasting relief.

  4. Broken Tooth:

    • This covers a wide range of dental trauma, from minor chips to major fractures causing significant pain.

      • At-Home Steps: Rinse your mouth with warm water. Save any broken pieces. Apply gauze for bleeding. Use a cold compress to reduce swelling.

      • Our Solution: Minor chips can be fixed with dental bonding. A larger break may require a durable dental crown to restore the tooth's function and appearance.

  5. Lost Filling or Crown:

    • When a filling or crown is lost, the underlying tooth is exposed, weak, and vulnerable to further damage.

      • At-Home Steps: Save your crown if you have it. Avoid chewing on that side. You can use temporary dental cement from a pharmacy for sensitivity.

      • Our Solution: Bring the crown with you. We can often re-cement it. If it's lost or broken, we will create a new, perfectly fitted crown to protect your tooth.
